The Black Room Technique

Modelling Behavior Protocol

Rob De Groof

Presented by

Rob De Groof

The “Black Room” Technique is a method of modeling the behavior of another person in a fast, comfortable, easy way. It allows you to take selected behaviors and skill sets which they have observed (or imagined) in others and make them your own.

Take over Tiger Woods’s mindset as a golfer. Take advantage of your favorite speaker’s presentation skills and use them to your advantage. Get the personal power of a person admired or respected by you. When you apply this technique with your clients, you will be able to change their lives to what they themselves want to experience with the selected behaviours and skills of the great leaders of these (or other) times. The advantage is that you can make these changes in a few minutes, no hours and hours of training or rehearsal. Let them live with the best qualities of those whom they admire.

Rob De Groof is one of Europe’s leading hypnotists and the owner of the very successful HypnosisCentre.be in Belgium where he is working together with 6 hypnotherapists in 3 different cities. As the owner and head trainer of the European Hypnosis Academy he has already trained a few hundred students in the wonderful art of direct hypnosis while teaching in his school in Belgium or while travelling the world. As the official trainer of his mentor, the late Jeffrey Stephens, one of his goals is to keep Jeffrey’s techniques and approach alive.

Alberto Dell'isola

Phenomenological control as cold control

Prof. Zoltan Dienes

Presented by

Prof. Zoltan Dienes

I first review recent work from our lab which construes hypnotisability as an example of a more general trait of capacity for phenomenological control, which people can use to create subjective experiences in many non-hypnotic contexts where having those experiences fulfils people’s goals; and second I review some recent work which construes phenomenological control as a specifically metacognitive process, where intentional cognitive and motor action occurs without awareness of specific intentions (cold control theory).

In terms of the reach of phenomenological control, I argue that various laboratory phenomena, namely vicarious pain, mirror-touch synesthesia and the rubber hand illusion are to an unknown degree a construction of phenomenological control.

The argument can of course be extended in principle to other experiences people have in the lab and outside of it. For example, the experience of the absorptions in states of concentration meditation may to an unknown degree depend on phenomenological control. In terms of the reach of cold control, I will just consider the relation between mindfulness and cold control (seen as a lack of mindfulness of intentions).

Professor of Psychology, University of Sussex. I organize Conscious and Unconscious Mental Processes, a final year option module; Perspectives on Psychology, a final year core module. I also teach philosophy of science in the masters module Ethics, Philosophy, and Methods, and a series of lectures on hypnosis in the first year undergraduate module Contemporary Issues in Psychology.

Hypnosis Quirkology

The curious research of the hypnosis field

Adam Eason

Presented by

Adam Eason

There are many topics in the field of modern hypnosis about which speculation has been rife for decades. Much has been written on the powers and dangers of hypnosis. What happens when you try to create warts, induce pain or heal broken bones using only hypnotic suggestion? Can you deliver hypnotic suggestions subliminally and can public figures use hypnosis on us? What happens when hypnosis is used to recreate delusion (such as erotomania or conversion hysteria) or out-of-body experiences (such as those described during near death experiences) in order to study such phenomenon?

Much experimental evidence has been collected regarding all of these topics and in this presentation, Adam will give a reliable account of the quirkiest and seemingly bizarre hypnosis research – as well as frankly acknowledging ignorance when the facts are still in dispute, he’ll boldly put forward a definite point of view where the evidence appears to justify it.

As well as spending much time researching in the laboratory himself, Adam Eason has extensively researched the evidence base of the hypnosis field for more than two decades and along the way has examined some of the more quirky science that this field has to offer. Here, he describes his forays into the backwaters of hypnotic phenomenon and offers a definitive guide to much of the folklore, myth and seemingly bizarre things that can and cannot be done with hypnosis. Throughout this presentation, emphasis is laid particularly on the detailed discussion of the evidence, leaving the audience to decide whether the conclusions drawn are justified.

I have been in full-time clinical practice as a hypnotherapist since 1996 and run my Anglo European College of Therapeutic Hypnosis since 1997 as well as lecturing for the University of Bournemouth and the Royal Society of Medicine at Masters degree level. I am the author of several books on hypnosis, broadcast the highly respected and popular 'Hypnosis Weekly' podcast and the 'Hypnosis Geek' YouTube channel.

With my PhD research, I authored the first systematic review and meta-analysis of the efficacy of clinical applications of self-hypnosis to feature in a peer-reviewed academic journal and am the first to study the application of self-hypnosis to inhibit the Stroop effect. My ongoing research continues to examine the efficacy of self-hypnosis to advance strength and cardio-respiratory endurance.

Why I changed my mind on Regression

A journey from ardent proponent to outspoken critic

Nick Ebdon

Presented by

Nick Ebdon

This presentation is an overview of my journey from ardent proponent of the principles of regression to cause (R2C) therapy, to one of its more outspoken critics, questioning its place in a modern hypnotherapy practice.

Less than five years ago I was a certified instructor for one of the largest hypnosis training organisations in the world, with R2C central to its teachings and its philosophy.

Now I will share with you how my growing doubts and experiences as a therapist and trainer caused me to question my own beliefs, everything I was doing and teaching to others and why I believe people should look at the R2C movement more critically and objectively.

Nick Ebdon is a personal and professional coach, trainer, business consultant and trading advisor. He has trained in a number of therapeutic and coaching modalities and is a former NGH and OMNI Hypnosis Certified Instructor. He launched the first UK Hypnosis Convention in 2016 and is incredibly proud to see it firmly establishing itself in its fourth year and under new owners, as the pre-eminent event for serious professional hypnotherapists and hypnotists.

IMR (Ideo-Motor Response) Why use it?

Lorraine Gleeson

Presented by

Lorraine Gleeson

IMR is the only technique that is unique to hypnotherapy and if facilitated with confidence is so extremely effective.

I have worked as a hypnotherapist for fifteen years and developed the IMR in a easy and simple way to elicit information from the sub-con without interference from the conscious analytical mind.  Truly being client centred and not making clients fit your techniques.

I qualified with my first accredited Hypnotherapy Diploma in 2004 with the Institute of Natural Therapies. I then went on to train with Proudfoot School Of Hypnosis in 2005, 2006 and 2007. I set up a full-time practice and developed the formula I now teach at the Hampshire School Of Hypnotherapy. The HSOH training is unique to the way I work, therefore I wrote a book to accompany my training titled How to be a Hypnotherapist.

Tumbuna stories

First hand experience of Practical use of hypnotic techniques in traditional and contemporary Papua New Guinean culture.

Ryan Jenkins

Presented by

Ryan Jenkins

In the 1980’s the presenter´s mother was an anthropologist who discovered a ¨lost¨ indigenous tribe in Papua New Guinea (where he was born and raised). The speaker witnessed how traditional healers used hypnotic techniques such as story telling to affect physical, psychological healing as well as preventative healthcare.

In the presentation the speaker will speak about first hand experiences and draw parallels between these techniques and methods that are currently taught in hypnosis schools around the world.

Ryan is a hypnotherapist and changeworker based in Barcelona, Spain. His first experiences with non-traditional ways of healing came very early on in life when his Mother discovered a “lost” indigenous tribe in Papua New Guinea. Ryan witnessed first hand how tribal healers used forms of ¨Trance¨ to heal people. This profoundly influenced the course of his life. This led to a deep study and practice of meditation and self-hypnosis, hypnosis, NLP and personal development."

All the way through the looking glass with Provocative Change Work

A two-hour introduction to the PCW model

Nick Kemp

Presented by

Nick Kemp

  • Demonstration of the two PCW techniques Steve Andreas confirmed as the most effective of all techniques he had come across in NLP & personal change
  • Working in the here and now free from the limitations of step by step protocols
  • Real life examples of PCW used in sports, business and therapy for client success
  • The art of provocation and the core 27 stances used by a PCW practitioner
  • PCW metaphor elicitation and challenges for successful coaching outcomes
  • Accelerated hypnotic patterns and fractionation for effective client change
  • Psycho education and micro adjustments to provide the difference that makes the difference in client work

I have been involved in personal change for over 40 years, having studied many approaches including NLP and hypnosis before coming across Provocative Therapy in 2004. I became a good friend and in latter years co trainer with Frank Farrelly who left me his life’s work when he passed a few years ago. Frank’s work helped me develop my own PCW (Provocative Change Works) approach which I now have taught in the USA, Japan, India, Spain, Switzerland, Russia, Poland, Austria, Ireland, Israel, Hungary and the UK. As well as teaching globally, I run an online student platform and two private clinics in the UK as well as services for the corporate sector.

The Three Doors

The Core Protocol to Treat Anxiety

Fredric Mau

Presented by

Fredric Mau

When in doubt, treat for anxiety. Three Doors process invites the client to engage the creative unconscious to experience different responses at a visceral, emotional level, as well as conscious choice. Almost all psychotherapeutic issues are anxiety driven, and anxiety makes all general medical conditions worse. This is my core go-to process for general anxiety reduction. It almost always helps significantly – and when it doesn’t work – that lets me know something strange is afoot.

Dr. Fredric Mau was just named Outstanding Counselor by the South Carolina Counseling Association, adding to his impressive research awards in Europe and the US. He will be keynote speaker at the 70th Anniversary Australian Hypnotherapists Association World Conference this fall. He is a Clinical Mental Health Counselor in the US, where he engages in treating emotions at a primal level, before cognition. Dr. Mau is a popular and engaging speaker in two worlds: psychotherapeutic counseling and clinical hypnosis.

Remembering...You Already Know How To Do This?

Greg McColl

Presented by

Greg McColl

In an environment of Quick Fix Protocols it is possible that practitioners lose sight of the fundamental skills that underlie effective approaches to therapy.  Whilst it is tempting to ‘chase the miracle, find the magic bullet and learn the latest 1 minute quick fix’ this takes practitioners away from really mastering core skills and developing confidence and flexibility.

We aim to remind practitioners that they already know a lot of the things that they need.

Greg initially studied Hypnotherapy in the early 90’s and continued his interest in NLP and Hypnosis throughout a career in audiology. Returning to full-time NLP, Hypnosis and Coaching work in 2014, he currently works in motorsport, with the police as well as the general public. He is one half of “Curious Balloon” with Pete Dalton who provides training in NLP, Hypnosis and communication focussed on helping people to learn & master the essential skills.

Approaching Collective Unconscious

Marc McDermott

Presented by

Marc McDermott

Most hypnosis seminars talk about ideas, concepts, possibilities, but do not elicit a specific process through which to achieve those possibilities, so it remains a philosophical or intellectual exercise.

However there is a specific process for learning HOW to experience changes in yourself and in the world around you, Decisions are made in the now, so you will be encouraged repeatedly to return to the present moment, to observe continuity of consciousness as it unfolds, and to engage with it in a new way.

Over the last 21 years, Marc has studied extensively with the best hypnosis trainers in the world, including Richard Bandler, Paul McKenna and Tad James. He is fascinated by the structure of consciousness, and his personal passion is to share the front edge of his continuing development and discoveries, for the benefit of as many people as possible. His presentations are entertaining and transformative in equal measure.

I have used hypnosis for the last 9 years and for 2.5 years have been a full-time hypnotist performing change work. Starting as a hobby, it developed into street hypnosis before moving to paid hypnosis entertainment. It was only a matter of time before I was asked to help people change their lives with hypnosis and so I started to train in that area, eventually making it my full-time career.

The Path of the Peaceful Practitioner

A framework for structured and rapid acquisition of complex and dynamic skills

Thomas Ockens

Presented by

Thomas Ockens

Changework is a collection of complex skills.  So are the martial arts.
There is some conceptual overlap between the two – both have traditional styles and modern styles, faith-based techniques and evidence-based techniques, charismatic exponents and …others – but martial arts have one thing that changework does not: a well-defined progression through levels of expected skill.

In this presentation, we will break down the martial arts belts model to evaluate our own progression towards changework mastery.

I have spent the last 30 years breaking hardware, software and joints for the greater good. Hypnosis as a means of hacking brains, ironing out bugs, connecting nodes and installing new thought processes is my logical career trajectory.

De-Hypnotising Judi

The Lady Who Lost Her Memory ... Why ManyTherapists Are Like Ducklings ... And How To Be A Great Hypnotherapist Without Being A Great Hypnotist

Andrew Parr

Presented by

Andrew Parr

In front of a full class of students, attendee Judi spontaneously slipped into a 5-hour trance-like protective state where her short term memory function shut down, she had no recollection of the previous 5 days … and had to be de-hypnotised back to normality. The case is so interesting because it’s an extreme version of quite a common occurrence – the fact that far from hypnotising people, the hypno-therapeutic process is often one of de-hypnotising someone from an un-useful trance.

In this talk I will reveal how I believe it happened, what I did to bring her back out of it, and lessons you can apply to your own practice and business.

I have spent 26 years in private practice - which equates to somewhere in excess of 16,000 1-1 hypnosis sessions, plus 6 years running a training school. Prior to all that I was a consultant engineer, punk rock guitarist ... and a compulsive daydreamer.

How effortless is responding to suggestions?

Ben Parris

Presented by

Dr Ben Parris

Involuntary, effortless responding is thought to be a key marker of responding to hypnotic suggestion (Bowers, 1982), and has been referred to as the classic suggestion effect (Weitzenhoffer, 1980). However, there is evidence of regulation of hypnotic responses, and the demonstration of active attention-demanding attempts to fulfill the requirements of hypnotic suggestions (Lynn, Rhue & Weekes, 1990). This talk will assess the evidence for effortless responding under suggestion.

After completing his DPhil in Experimental Psychology at the University of Sussex in 2005, Dr Parris went on to post docs positions at the University of Exeter and the University of Oxford. He joined Bournemouth University in 2008 where he has further developed his work on frontal lobe functions, attentional control in hypnosis and suggestion, and in the investigation of the symptom of inattention.

No Self, No Problem

Interventions at the deepest level of identity and self concept

Jørgen Rasmussen

Presented by

Jørgen Rasmussen

Almost all of our thinking is self-referential, and this self-referential thinking revolves around enhancing, bolstering and protecting a seemingly PERMANENT, STABLE and SEPARATE self.

However, this sense of being the agent or “captain of the ship” is an illusion, and falling for this illusion and maintaining it creates a lot of unnecessary suffering.

This seminar is about how you can help your clients (and yourself) to see through this illusion as it relates to their presenting issues. Paradoxically, healthy psychological development (and many changes ) require a sense of self for the purpose of healthy boundaries and clear communication. This is also a seminar about how to help clients manage this seeming paradox.

Jørgen Rasmussen has seen clients professionally since becoming a trainer of NLP in 1998. He is the author of Provocative Hypnosis (2008) and Provocative Suggestions (2015), and consistently sees clients from all over the world, in addition to teaching seminars internationally. He teaches a Psychological Illusion Model of Hypnosis and Changework, a framework that rejects the notion of "mental illness" and which views most of unnecessary suffering as the result of people falling for some basic psychological illusions and basically misunderstanding the nature of their own experience.

Active Flow-Hacking through and for hypnosis

How Flow-experience enhances hypnosis and how Flow-experience is fostered by hypnosis

Claude Ribaux

Presented by

Claude André Ribaux

We look at 17 or more flow state triggers driving our attention into ‘THE DEEP NOW’ a state of present heightened focus becoming more commonly known as “The Flow State”

By including some of these triggers, you can push yourself into a state of peak performance. This will increase whatever activity you are in, and your creativity, innovation, learning, and memory will all be enhanced.

This means: productivity enhanced by 5, creativity tripled.

The individual quality of flow triggers can be identified during hypnosis. They also serve to deepen or intensify the hypnotic experience as well as promotor of learning in hypnosis.

Trained as a social scientist, Claude André Ribaux was originally engaged as manager of international public health initiatives, mainly working for the international Red Cross movement, where much of his time was in project development and working as a consultant in change processes and conflict transformation in complex political environments. He initiated his own training organisation in 1991 and started work as a full time coach and therapist in 1998. His experience was used in many Asian countries such as Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Vietnam, Mongolia, Sri Lanka. Today he runs his own coaching and training organisation in Switzerland, and is specialised in teaching active-alert hypnosis. Over the past 25 years he has conducted far more than 20,000 therapy and coaching sessions and provided hundreds of days of training.

Working with sexual dysfunction

the vaginismus monologues and more.....

Kaz Riley

Presented by

Kaz Riley

Ask most therapists about working with sexual dysfunction and what they need to know – the majority will focus in on male sexual dysfunction. Ask the same question to client groups and it’s the females that are crying out for help.

This presentation will look at working with sexual dysfunction with both males and females and the difference between the two. As a more open attitude towards sex becomes culturally acceptable an interesting side effect is an increase in the incidence of sexual dysfunction and a wider range of sexual issues. It will help you understand why this is, how to combat it and give you a protocol to work with.

Kaz Riley is a Hypnotist and international trainer. A specialist in treating anxiety-related issues and sexual-related issues including: fertility, birth, birth trauma, sexual dysfunctions, sensuality, and kink-friendly therapy. Calling all senses

The importance of sensory input based kids hypnosis

Ruth Roethlisberger

Presented by

Ruth Roethlisberger

Working with kids in hypnosis is different from working with adults as their attention span is shorter and they might struggle with sitting still and keeping their eyes closed. On the other hand kids love to move and have the amazing ability to just go in and out of hypnosis within seconds.

This is why I think that we need to give them a full sensory experience throughout the session. As a kids therapist you need to know how to trigger all of your young clients´ senses and make them feel, taste, smell, hear and visualise the change they are about to have in their life.

I was born in Germany in 1979. In 2007 I moved to Switzerland to work for TUI - a tour operator. In 2014 I became an OMNI certified hypnotherapist as well as a HypnoKids specialist while living in Singapore. I opened my own hypnosis practice after moving back to Switzerland in 2015. Since 2017 up to 80% of my work is working with children aged 7 – 13 years of age. In 2015 and 2016 I became an active-alert therapist, since 2018 I am also an instructor. I regularly offer relaxation evenings as well as visionboard workshops.

Hacking Hypnosis – From Practice To Theory

Reflections on a career inside an exciting and experimental hypnosis collective

Kev Sheldrake

Presented by

Kev Sheldrake

Head Hacking was a whirlwind.

We developed training courses and products; we popularised “street hypnosis”; we performed at events and in TV shows; we consulted to magicians and advertising agencies; we travelled the world and met our heroes; we ran a respected hypnosis conference; and we developed a new approach to suggestion built on academic research.

I will reveal the untold story from inside Head Hacking, the hypnosis company that tried to change the world.

Kev is a hacker, magician and hypnotist. He worked with Anthony Jacquin for many years as business partner, writer and producer at Head Hacking: a pioneering company that popularised street hypnosis through products and training, taught hypnosis to magicians, researched academic perspectives on the nature of suggestion, and ran the annual hypnosis conference "change | phenomena". As a hacker he has presented his research at numerous international conferences and he currently works in threat intelligence.

David Shephard co-foundered FixMyMind with his business partner James Mallinson. FixMyMind has gone on to become one of the most successful therapy practices in the UK.

During this session David will explain how they did it from a business perspective rather than a therapy perspective. There are 9 things essential to building a successful therapy practice and during the session he will share these with you.

If you were to start implementing them right after his session your therapy business is guaranteed to become more successful. David and James have proven that they work.

In 1990 David Shephard resigned from a successful career in the City of London and chose to be educated and licensed as an Achievement Coach by The Centre of Achievement. People thought he was crazy but this was the first step on the road to becoming a global expert in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and one of the most highly sought-after and respected Master Trainers in the world. He changed the game for himself and, in doing so, dedicated his life to helping others change it for themselves. Through his dedication and skill, David was certified as a Master Trainer of NLP just three years after his formal certification in NLP (two years earlier than is generally expected) joining the ranks of his mentor, Dr. Tad James (the world-renowned creator of Time Line Therapy®), as well as Julie Silverthorn and John Overdurf; some of the most respected Master Trainers of NLP in the world.

The cognitive neuroscience of the highly suggestible person

Dr Devin Terhune

Presented by

Dr Devin Terhune

Verbal suggestions are capable of eliciting pronounced changes in cognition and perception and their neurophysiological substrates, particularly in highly suggestible individuals. I will describe our recent research aiming to elucidate the neurocognitive profile of these individuals. This research adds to accumulating evidence implicating brain networks supporting higher-order awareness and cognitive control and highlights some of the vulnerabilities conferred by high suggestibility. Studying this unique population offers a valuable path to understanding the mechanisms of suggestion and germane phenomena .

Devin is a senior lecturer in psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London where he co-directs the Goldsmiths Consciousness Research Unit and directs the Timing, awareness, and suggestion lab. His lab uses methods from cognitive neuroscience and experimental psychology to study different features of awareness with a focus on the neural bases of time perception and the use of suggestion to regulate awareness.

The Power of Disgust

How To Use The Art Of Aversion Effectively With Hypnosis

Didi Vergados

Presented by

Didi Vergados

Disgust is a strong emotion and it can be a very powerful motivator of human behaviour, especially when used in very direct and intentional way.

Many of us have had the experience of having eaten or drank something that did not sit well in our stomachs, or may have even made us really sick. For some of us, the next time we came face to face with that substance, we simply did not want to ever touch it ever again. The thought of it may have even made our stomachs turn. This is an aversive reaction.

In this one hour seminar you will learn how and why the power of disgust works with habit control, and how you can use the art of aversion in an intentional way with clients that are out of control with habits, substances or behaviours that simply do not serve them in any positive way.

Didi Vergados is a Certified Hypnotist (1998), a Master Health Practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming (1999) and the Author of Brain Hacks For Higher Success & Optimal Performance. Didi is also a sought after professional speaker in the field of emotional health and wellbeing having appeared on numerous podcasts, television shows, radio interviews as well as a presenter at various conferences. Conferences include: Hypnothoughts (3 years consecutively) and the Canadian Hypnosis Conference. Didi is passionate about weight loss, food addiction and habit control. She brings a wealth of information to the subject, as she herself struggled with her weight for the first 30 years of her life. Because of this, she can relate both personally and professionally to her clients.

Helping with the front line

A soldiers perception

Graham Webber

Presented by

Graham Webber

Being a serving soldier I know the difference in languages, meanings and how soldiers think about serving within the forces.

During this presentation I will take you through how to understand the military mind. How military personnel speak, what is meant by their slang, different activities that take place and some break downs of what they may be exposed to on the battefield.

This will assist you as the therapist with the soldier in front of you in the therapy room for understanding, limiting pauses for questions which in turn will assist with rapport.

As a serving soldier I started hypnosis following a love of magic. Starting with Anthony Jacquin and the Head Hackers street work complimented my magic. After finding a colleague suffered with PTSD a look into how hypnosis can help more began and a my diploma with the UK Hypnosis Academy started.
