This course is intended for 4 audiences:
(1) Individuals working on the medical frontlines, guiding patients through medical visits, tests, and/or procedures and their administrative support staff.
(2) Therapists using hypnosis in their practice. You won’t have 45 minutes, but 5 minutes at most, to interact with patients in acute settings.
(3) Individuals who want to make the medical system more holistic.
(4) Organizations striving to counter the Great Resignation. Organizations can reinvigorate their staff’s job satisfaction by providing them with a new skill, dramatically helping patients.
The Comfort Talk® technique is based on 30 years of extensive clinical trials and practice. It uses non-pharmacological techniques to reduce patients’ anxiety and pain, conforming to UK recommendations for surgical/ interventional care, including those from the Royal Colleges of Anesthetists and Nursing.
Expanding on Dr. Lang’s Saturday Convention Talk, topics will be covered in greater detail, and the cases will be more challenging. Using slides, videos, role-play, practical exercises, and large group discussions, the audience will learn how to successfully use rapid hypnotic techniques in the fast-paced, acute care medical environment and how to guard against unhelpful interferences. The workshop will address word choice, use of scripts or script elements, imagery, and metaphors in relation to presenting symptoms and their symbolism, as well as targeted approaches to pain, worry, and anxiety management. The post-pandemic sequelae of distress will be considered by working on resilience and resistance. The participants will learn how to approach resistance in patients, the environment, and their own selves. Insights will be shared on how to spread the message throughout systems and institutions based on the Comfort Talk experience with various practices and organizations.
At the end of this program, the attendees will leave with skills that allow them to:
- Become more comfortable offering hypnosis in a frontline setting
- Become more aware of their choice of language
- Address pain, anxiety, and worries nonpharmacologically
- Manage resistance in others and their own selves
Upon request, participants will receive for free for on year a weekly snippet for spaced learning by email. Each snippet contains one specific skill to focus on for that week, a quiz about it, some background information about it, and an answer to the quiz.
